Busboys & Poets and PEN America are proud to present a Letter Write-In at Busboys & Poets in Shirlington. Writing letters is one of the most important ways we can offer support and community to those who are incarcerated. Prisons are designed to be isolating, and communication from the outside world can help prisoners feel like they are connecting with people and reminds them that they are not alone. Whether this is your first letter or one of many, participants can sit together and help one another craft meaningful letters to incarcerated family members, friends, and community members. Participants will be given the opportunity to read original work from writers who have been published in The Beat Within, a literary magazine that publishes art and writing from inside prisons across the United States. Guidelines for writing letters to prisoners will be provided. This event is co-sponsored by The Beat Within, whose mission is to provide incarcerated youth with the consistent opportunity to share their ideas and life experiences in a safe space that encourages literacy and self-expression.
