Join us for an urgent discussion on Iran Nuclear Deal and the future of US-Iran relations

What will happen if the US pulls out of the Iran nuclear deal? Are we headed down a path towards war with Iran? What can we do to stop it? Speakers: Congressman Ro Khanna; Jamal Adbi, Executive Director, NIAC (National Iranian-American Council) Action; Fatemeh Keshavarz, Director of the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies, University of Maryland; Medea Benjamin, CODEPINK and author of new book Inside Iran: The Real History and Politics of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The event will also be a book signing.

About the panelist: 

Congressman Ro Khanna represents California’s 17th Congressional District, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, and is serving in his first term. Rep. Khanna sits on the House Budget and Armed Services committees and is a vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.He is one of just six elected officials to refuse contributions from PACs and lobbyists. Prior to serving in Congress, Rep. Khanna taught economics at Stanford University, law at Santa Clara University, and American Jurisprudence at San Francisco State University.

Fatemeh Keshavarz is Director of the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies at the University of Maryland. Keshavarz is author of several award-winning books, including Jasmine and Stars: Reading more than Lolita in Tehran. She is a published poet in Persian and English. Her NPR show “The ecstatic faith of Rumi” brought her the Peabody Award in 2008. She is also the recipient of the “Herschel Walker Peace and Justice Award.

Jamal Abdi joined the National Iranian American Council as Policy Director in November 2009, and is now Executive Director of NIAC Action. He was Policy Advisor to Representative Brian Baird (D-WA) and a field organizer for national Congressional elections in Seattle and Bellevue. He received his B.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle, majoring in Political Science with a focus on International Relations. Jamal has written for The New York Times, CNN, Foreign Policy, The Hill, The Progressive and Public Service Europe, is a frequent guest contributor on Al Jazeera, RT America, NPR, BBC Radio, and VOA.

Barbara Slavin is the director of the Future of Iran Initiative at the Atlantic Council and a columnist for Al-Monitor.com. The author of Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the US and the Twisted Path to Confrontation (2007), she is a regular commentator on US foreign policy and Iran on NPR, PBS, and C-SPAN. She has traveled to Iran nine times. Slavin also served as a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and as a senior fellow at the US Institute of Peace. 

Medea Benjamin is the co-founder of the women-led peace group CODEPINK and the co-founder of the human rights group Global Exchange. She is the author of ten books, including Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control and Kingdom of the Unjust: Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection. Her most recent book, Inside Iran: The Real History and Politics of the Islamic Republic of Iran, is part of a campaign to prevent a war with Iran and instead promote normal trade and diplomatic relations. Her articles appear regularly in outlets such as The Guardian, The Huffington Post, CommonDreams, Alternet and The Hill.
