Join Busboys and Poets Curator Carol Rhodes Dyson in conversation with Melani Douglass, Marie Emerson, and Mohini Malhotra discussing how the current activism is bringing women's art and issues to the fore.

Melani Douglass
Melani N. Douglass, Director of Public Programs at the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA), heads the groundbreaking Women, Arts and Social Change (WASC) initiative. Elevating museum programming to a new standard with curated conversations, communal dinners and dynamic events, WASC is inspiring a model for other institutions. At NMWA, Douglass is cultivating a network of artists, curators, collectors, journalists, thought leaders, business influentials and art lovers who understand the power of art to shape and transform society. Through community partnerships and collaborations, she is expanding the reach of NMWA’s public program initiatives.
Douglass began her career as an educator. Her students used art as a tool to learn, heal, explore the world and make connections. Her path as a teacher led her to pursue a career in curatorial practice and community engagement. Douglass is a graduate of Morgan State University and holds a Master in Fine Art in Curatorial Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Prior to her position at NMWA, she was the Community Engagement Manager at Everyman Theatre. She is the founder of the Family Arts Museum, a nomadic institution that celebrates and documents family as fine art, home as curated space and community as gallery.

Marie Emerson
Marie Emerson is a photographer based in the Washington metropolitan area. Her artistry primarily focuses on the socioeconomic and political circumstances of societies, illustrating the multi-facets of human emotions as they exist in nature.
In addition to fine art photography, Emerson practices a variety of other genres of photography such as: events, black and white, landscape, portraiture, street, still life, fashion, lifestyle, corporate, and journalism. Emerson is also trained in data visualizations, website and graphic design, cinematography, musical composition, and writing.

Mohini Malhotra
Mohini Malhotra is the Founder and Executive of shakti.Â
shakti is a marriage of Mohini's passions for social justice, development and art. While working as an economist for the World Bank, she spent years working for poor people around the world to access financial services, homes, education, health services, voice and basic rights. Art became her window into appreciating a country’s culture and people, and artists her translators of the cultural refrain. shakti - https://www.artbywomen.gallery
