Join Island Press and Busboys and Poets for a conversation and book signing with journalist Carey Gillam. Fifty-five years after Rachel Carson’ Silent Spring awakened the world to unchecked pesticide use, Whitewash illustrates how deeply we have failed to heed that warning. Carey Gillam lays bare disturbing details about decades of deception behind the spread of the world’s most popular pesticide: glyphosate, known commonly as Monsanto’s Roundup. The reality is that this chemical endangers our environment and is pervasive in fruits, vegetables, bread, and even drinking water. The capstone of 20 years of meticulous reporting, Whitewash lays out the dangerous consequences of putting corporate profits ahead of public safety.
Carey Gillam is a journalist, researcher, and writer with more than 25 years’ experience covering corporate America. Since 1998, Gillam’s work has focused on digging into the big business of food and agriculture. Gillam’s areas of experience include biotech crop technology, agrichemicals and pesticide product development, and the environmental impacts of American food production. Gillam has been recognized as one of the top journalists in the country covering these issues.
