Please join Busboys and Poets Books as we welcome authors Radley Balko and Tucker Carrington to present THE CADAVER KING AND THE COUNTRY DENTIST: A True Story of Injustice in the American South.Â
In what Garden & Gun called a “blistering exposé†the authors expose the most pressing problems facing America’s criminal justice system: structural injustice built on the historic foundation of race and class, and the much more contemporary but equally egregious problem of invalid forensic science. The old problem is inextricably entangled with and exacerbates the new. Following the cases of Kennedy Brewer and Levon Brooks—two innocent men who spent a combined 30 years in prison in Mississippi—and the shoddy medical examiners who helped put them behind bars, Balko and Carrington chronicle how our criminal justice system has failed thousands of Americans.
Radley Balko is an investigative journalist and reporter at the Washington Post. He currently writes and edits The Watch, covering civil liberties and the criminal justice system. He is the author of Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America’s Police Forces. Tucker Carrington is the director of the George C. Cochran Innocence Project at the University of Mississippi School of Law. He has worked as a criminal defense lawyer for his entire legal career.
This event is co-sponsored by PublicAffairs. Books will be available for purchase before and after the event. Please contact Busboys and Poets Books at books@busboysandpoets.com with questions.Â
