Description:

Sunday Kind of Love Open Mic Poetry features emerging and established poets from the Washington, DC area and around the nation. Each program includes one to two featured poets and an open mic segment. Co-sponsored by Split This Rock, Sunday Kind of Love was notably featured in the Washington, DC episode of the Travel Channel original series, Samantha Brown’s Great Weekends.

Hosted by Sarah Browning and Katy Richey 

Sarah Browning is the author of Killing Summer (Sibling Rivalry, 2017) and Whiskey in the Garden of Eden (The Word Works, 2007). She is co-founder and Executive Director of Split This Rock: Poetry of Provocation & Witness and an Associate Fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies. Browning is the recipient of artist fellowships from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, a Creative Communities Initiative grant, and the People Before Profits Poetry Prize. She has been guest editor or co-edited special issues of Beltway Poetry Quarterly, The Delaware Poetry Review, and POETRY magazine. Since 2006, Browning has co-hosted the Sunday Kind of Love poetry series at Busboys and Poets in Washington, DC.

Katy Richey 

Katy Richey’s work has appeared in Rattle, Cincinnati Review, RHINO, The Offing, and other journals. She received an honorable mention for the Cave Canem Poetry Prize and was a finalist for Tupelo Press Snowbound Chapbook Poetry Award. She has received fellowships from Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Callaloo Creative Writing Workshops and The Cave Canem Foundation. She is also the recipient of a Fine Arts Work Center Walker Scholarship for Writers of Color and a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award. She is a member of the Black Ladies Brunch Collective.

FEATURING: Shauna M. Morgan & Frank X Walker

Shauna M. Morgan is the author of Fear of Dogs & Other Animals. She is a poet and scholar who teaches creative writing and literature of the African Diaspora at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Her current research focuses on representations of womanhood and Neo-anticolonialism in 21st-century literature. Her poems were shortlisted for the 2011 Small Axe literary prize and won Interviewing the Caribbean's 2016 Catherine James Palmer prize. She has published poetry in A Gathering Together, ProudFlesh: New Afrikan Journal of Culture, Politics & Consciousness, Pluck! The Journal of Affrilachian Arts & Culture, The Pierian, Illuminations, and elsewhere. Her critical work has appeared in the CLA Journal, ARIEL, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Journal of Postcolonial Writing, and South Atlantic Review.

Frank X Walker is the first African American writer to be named Kentucky Poet Laureate. Walker is a Professor of English and African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky in Lexington where he founded pluck! The Journal of Affrilachian Arts & Culture. He has published ten collections of poetry, including Turn Me Loose: The Unghosting of Medgar Evers, which was awarded the 2014 NAACP Image Award for Poetry and the Black Caucus American Library Association Honor Award for Poetry. He is also the author of Buffalo Dance: The Journey of York, winner of the 2004 Lillian Smith Book Award, and Isaac Murphy: I Dedicate This Ride, which he adapted for stage. Voted one of the most creative professors in the south, Walker, a Danville native, coined the term “Affrilachia” and co-founded the Affrilachian Poets. A Cave Canem fellow, his honors also include a 2004 Lannan Literary Fellowship for Poetry.

Sunday Kind of Love is held on the 3rd Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14th& V from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

$5 Cover. On the day of the event, tickets can be purchased online starting at midnight and in the restaurant starting at 10:00 AM in the bookstore. No refunds. Ticket purchase limit of 4 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door if available.  

Guests must have their wristbands (tickets) on upon entering the event.
