The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion series is hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action! Each month there is a new topic for discussion.
This month's topic: Recent MPD Activities in Ward 7 and 8, Featuring Ward 7 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner, Anthony Lorenzo Green.
We will discuss the legacy of tension between the residents of wards 7 and 8 and the MPD and how do we address that? Who can we make accountable for these egregious missteps by a force that is charged to protect the city as a whole? How do we take care of one another on a political realm to change the climate of biased policing and racial profiling?
Mr. Green is a third generation Washingtonian, born at Howard University Hospital. He was raised in Ward 7 by his grandmother in the oldest African-American neighborhood in the city, Deanwood.
After many hardships and a public school system that failed him, Mr. Green was able to earn his GED and make changes in his life due in no small part to the love and support of his grandmother.
Because of her steady hand and an abundance of unconditional love, the problems he faced and the lessons she taught him led to a journey of public service. His grandmother prefers to describe it as “doing the Lord’s work.”
Lorenzo heeded the call to #dosomething in 2012 and put his name forward as a candidate for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner. With 70% of the vote, Lorenzo was elected to his first term as commissioner.
Upon returning to his native Deanwood (Ward 7), Lorenzo was elected ANC Commissioner for Ward 7in November 2016!
Free and open to all.
A.C.T.O.R. is held on the first Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14th & V from 5:00 PM-7:00 pm.
