Description:

Please join the Clinical Translational Science Institute-Children’s National (CTSI-CN) for Science Café 360: From Placenta to Preschool: The Developing Brain and What Communities Can Do to Support It in The Pearl Bailey Room. Science Café 360 is a casual space for open dialogue between community members, researchers, and social scientists. Clinical researchers and others will demystify what they do and how they do it and why they think it may help local residents.

The featured speakers are: Dr. Anna Penn, a neonatologist and developmental neuroscientist at Children’s National Health System; Dr. Lee Beers, a pediatrician and director of the DC Mental Health Access in Pediatrics (DC MAP) program and Early Childhood Innovation Network (ECIN); and, Gail Avent, Executive Director and founder of Total Family Care Coalition (TFCC), a family-run not-for-profit organization that helps families that have emotional, behavioral, and mental health difficulties. Dr. Penn will discuss her research in neuroplacentology and how placental function shapes the developing brain. Dr. Beers will provide information on the Early Childhood Innovation Network, with a specific focus on her research on early childhood mental health and toxic stress. Ms. Avent will discuss the work of her grassroots peer-to-peer family and youth support program that she founded after experiencing stumbling blocks in accessing mental health services for her son.

Science Café 360° is a casual forum, held at a local coffee shop, for community members to talk with pioneering health researchers about pressing local health issues. Each discussion focuses on a different health topic – sickle cell disease, sleep and stress, or obesity, for example. Leading researchers in the field will explain their work, and the impact they hope it will have on health in the District. In turn, community members have the opportunity to ask questions and share their own experiences.
