Description:

Let’s Keep Talking!

ACTOR (A Continuing Talk on Race)

What is going on in the Congo? And how are we connected?

  • Did you know that the second largest rainforest in the world is in the Congo?
  • Did you know that Congo holds 80 % of the world's coltan?

(Colton is a black metal used to manufacture one of the critical components of cell phones, laptops, cars, and many other electronics.)

  • Did you know that the DRC is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa?
  • Did you know the median age in the Congo is 15 years old?
  • Did you know that the conflict in the eastern DRC has cost approximately six million lives since 1996?

(Making it one of the deadliest conflicts in world history.

  • Has there been a shift in our world?

The public, live-streamed display of genocide, ethnic cleansing, slave & child labor, colonial settler occupation, and indiscriminate violence--has shone a light on our shared humanity.

Palestine is the “tip of the spear.” As humanitarians worldwide are calling for the freedom of the Palestinian people, these same people, all over the world, have issued the call for the freedom of oppressed people everywhere! From Palestine to Haiti, Sudan, Libya, to the Congo…All people deserve to live free and to their full human potential without oppression and exploitation.

Please join the ACTOR community for our discussion about the Democratic Republic of the Congo with esteemed activist and scholar Maurice Carney.

Maurice Carney is a co-founder and Executive Director of the Friends of the Congo. For decades, Maurice has been advocating for the dignity and inclusion of the Congolese civil society in all efforts for peace, democracy, food sovereignty, and climate justice. He provides consultation to political leaders in the US, Canada, Latin America, Africa, and the UN, as well as international NGOs and funders.

This discussion promises to be enlightening and informative!
