Between Georgetown’s cozy position at 37th St NW and its cross city counterpart in the “TreSeven†neighborhood at 37th St SE stretch only a few miles. The disconnect in understanding of our DC neighbors here, however, creates problems far more divisive than physical distance. In a media search, one street turns up articles involving “a slew of development opportunities,†Olympic athlete visits, and glorified construction jobs. For the other, articles address “criminal behavior,†injured juveniles, and far too many lives lost. In a small city where communities are so divided through geography, media representation, and resource access, the juxtaposition of 37th Street NW to 37th Street SE is too powerful to ignore.
Witness peace through empathy and understanding. The showcase is the culmination of a project aimed at making connections - between community members in different neighborhoods in DC, and between the two 37th Streets. Connections formed in the context of story sharing and mutual understanding will uplift the degree of empathy that this DC community feels from the rest of our city, thus leading to a better sense of how peace can exist.
