Our partners in entertainment are fighting daily for their livelihood, and it's time the comedic community made it clear where we stand.
The lines between comics, writers, and actors are more interwoven than the family tree of the British Royal Family.
Both writing and acting are foundations of comedy, as these skills are necessary to create and perform jokes, so it should come as no surprise that many actors and writers have a comedic background, and vice versa.
These days we all stream our favorite shows and movies that illicit unique feelings we can't get anywhere else. Whether it's a quippy sitcom like Abbot Elementary, the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the reality TV show (basically) Succession, this entertainment would not be possible without writers and actors working hard every day. In spite of their ever-growing impact, greedy executives have refused to fairly compensate those that actually do the work. The Writers Guild of America ( WGA ) has been striking since may, and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has been striking since mid-July. In spite of threats to replace them with AI or fire them altogether, both group have stood their ground, with significant projects being delayed indefinitely. Many of those striking don't have other sources of income, making this a fight for survival for many.
Grassroots Comedy has seen enough, which is why we're supporting the movement for fair wages through comedy! A portion of proceeds from this show will go to SAG-AFTRA to make this fight easier. These strikes set a powerful example of the importance of labor unions, and a victory for these unions is a step toward ALL of us being paid properly for the work we do, no matter what it is.
As always, this show will feature some of the best comedians in the Mid-Atlantic and will be sure to tickle your funny bone while tickling the hearts of those creatives who need our support now more than ever.
