ANACOSTIA YOUTH FILM AND MEDIA FESTIVAL will be a two-day event on the weekend of May 19 and 20, 2023. The Anacostia Youth Media Festival will be the first youth-directed festival in the DC area organized and held in the Anacostia Neighborhood of Washington, DC. The two-day event will feature a DC Youth Media competition screening as well as a partner event with the Minneapolis Saint Paul Film Society’s Next Wave Education Initiative.
The youth need to be heard more than ever at this critical transition in their development. Furthermore, the youth need an opportunity to exhibit and publicly showcase their work. The Anacostia Youth and Media Festival will celebrate the youth of wards 7 and 8 by hosting a public event exhibiting their work, in their community. This opportunity will bring attention to the Anacostia area and bring attendees of the festival from all over the DC Metropolitan area.
FESTIVAL THEME
The Anacostia Youth Media Festival theme is “DC on the Go-Go” and work with Humanities and Community Advocate and Scholar Ronald Moten. Students from across DC will be encouraged to submit video work which reflects their own lives and community in the post-covid world. The video work will be accepted in a variety of formats and be limited to 3 to 7 minutes so that the festival can accommodate many youth participants.
The festival is a collaboration between American University students and youth from wards 7 and 8. The event itself will be held over two days at the Go-Go Museum and Café in the Anacostia neighborhood. The festival will host screenings from youth from the DC area, which embrace the DC on the Go-Go theme. Additionally, there will be a variety of workshops held to support youths’ interest in making videos and using social media.
