Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets 5th & K welcomes Joe Solmonese to present their new book "The Gift of Anger: Use Passion to Build Not Destroy”
Former CEO of Emily’s List and past president of Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ organization, Solmonese knows a lot about how to make change happen. As his stories of successful social justice campaigns illustrate, a key part of Solmonese’s strategy has been harnessing anger: by viewing it as energy, Solmonese learned how to direct it. Showing how to make outrage productive, he details instances of using righteous indignation strategically and of empathizing with adversaries rather than shaming them. He also reminds us to look for allies in unlikely places, and that achieving the impossible proceeds one small step at a time. These and other techniques helped Solmonese and HRC beat overwhelming odds to get marriage equality laws passed in eight states and to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
Books will be available for sale at the bookstore.
