Description:

In My Father is in Prison, a children’s picture book, the reader follows Louis as he denies his father’s whereabouts by inventing imaginative stories to his new classmates. Louis learns he can only maintain the tales for so long. There is no single story that describes the experience of a child with an incarcerated parent. My Father is in Prison is for both children and adults.

The Pew Charitable Trust reported that more than 2.7 million children have an incarcerated parent in the U.S. The Casey Foundation reports that parental incarceration is now recognized as an “adverse childhood experience” distinguished by trauma, shame, and stigma. Schools, teacher education programs, and impacted communities have remained mostly silent on the collateral effects of parental imprisonment.
