Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets Takoma welcomes Bill Beverly, author of the new book "Dodgers" with musical guest Soccer Team part of the Story/Stereo project.
In his fiction debut, Beverly, author of On the Lam: Narratives of Flight in J. Edgar Hoover’s America, and a writing and American literature teacher at Trinity College, tells a powerful coming-of-age story set on the American highway. Sixteen-year-old East, his younger brother, and two fellow gang members from South LA have been sent by East’s uncle to get rid of a key witness in Wisconsin. For most of them, this is the first time they’ve been out of their native city. They find the country overwhelming and alienating; East, especially, pays close attention to everything, and his spare, clear-eyed response to his new experiences is life-changing in any number of surprising ways.
As part of the Story/Stereo project of pairing nationally recognized writers with local musicians, Beverly
will be joined by Soccer Team, a band formed by Ryan Nelson and Melissa Quinley in 2006, and now
also featuring Dennis Kane on drums and Jason Hutto on guitar. The group’s albums include Real Lessons in Cynicism and “Volunteered†Civility and Professionalism.
