Join us in the Nicolás Guillén room to learn about this important piece of civil rights history with its roots in the Takoma community. We'll also be screening the film " I am Somebody", a short film featuring Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Rev. James Bellamy, Corky Gonzales, Josea Williams, and other African American, Latino and Native American civil rights leaders. The film deatures interviews with participants and footage of the encampment on the National Mall during The Poor People's Campaign.
Light refreshments served.

About The Project:
A community effort is underway to place The Hand on 4th St, NW (one block from the metro, across from Takoma Station Tavern) as part of the upcoming traffic and streetscape changes that are proposed to occur in 2017. A prominent location has been selected in the design, offering The Hand as a beacon to the community and reflective of its history. The Hand currently sits at the Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square and is in need of significant restoration.
Can't make the event? You Can Still Join the Effort! We need your help to fund the return of The Hand to Takoma. Minimum suggested donation: $10. Donations are tax deductible. The Old Takoma Business Association, Main Street Takoma, is a 501(c)3.
