Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets 14th & V presents Sophie Blackall & John Bemelman Marciano to present their new book Witches of Benevento: Mischief Season.
Marciano and Caldecott Medal winner Blackall’s new series takes place in 1820s Benevento, Italy, a place historically reputed to be full of witches. In fact, not only are there witches—not your stereotypical pointy-hatted ladies, but all manner of demons and sprites—but there are also Janara, who come out during Mischief Season and are humans by day but flying, weather-controlling beings at night. Cheese-loving, rule-breaking Rosa is always blaming the Janara for her misdeeds. Then, during one particularly eventful Mischief Season, she wakes up repeatedly with a stomachache and an itchy nose; could it be the Janara revenging themselves upon her for making them her scapegoat one time too many? When even more mischiefs occur, Rosa, her twin brother Emilio, and their friends Primo, Maria Beppina, and Sergio try to figure out which Janara is mad at Rosa—and how to get them to stop their naughty hijinks.
