Hamsaa The Arts Movement Presents: THE DEVIL WEARS RAAGA

Artist interaction 3-4 PM, Live performance 4-5 PM

Evil’s sinewy shadows crawl out of the dark all around us. Indian mythology is filled with stories of superheroes, gods and demons. Ravana, the ten headed Hindu king; Mara the Buddhist demon; and Kali, the woman goddess of hundred hands, make us wonder if anything is inherently good or evil. This Halloween, experience the shades of wicked through a Carnatic music performance highlighting nuances of melody (raga) and rhythm (tala).

The Music: Carnatic music is an ancient genre of Indian classical music with origins in Southern India having intricate melody patterns (raga), rhythm (tala) and varying pitch (sruti).

The Musician: Rithvik Raja is a Carnatic classical vocalist with a style that is expressive and energetic. He started his training at the age of 13, from T. M Krishna, a leading figure in Carnatic music. Raja heads the Youth Association of Classical Music, Chennai and has won several awards titles including ‘Isai Chudar’ and ‘Yuva Kala Bharathi’.
