Join is for a film screening and discussion of the award-winning PBS documentary Latino Americans.
This evening begins Hola Cultura’s Fall Screening Series with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. We’ll show Latino Americans’ Episode 5 on the Latino civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The United Farm Workers waged a historic unionization battle in California, Latino students staged walkouts in Los Angeles, Chicago and elsewhere, while Chicanos in Texas untapped voter power. In Washington, meanwhile, Latino immigrants were writing a fascinating, little-known chapter of our local history.
Discussion will be led by Dr. Olivia Cadaval
Olivia Cadaval holds a Ph.D. in American studies and folklife from George Washington University. Since joining the Center in 1988, she has curated numerous Festival programs including El Rio (2000), México (2010),Colombia: The Nature of Culture (2011), and Perú: Pachamama (2015). She has also produced curriculum enrichment materials, exhibitions, and websites, such as the bilingual site “Assembling the Festival Program: Colombia.” She has worked extensively on documentation, public programs, and education projects in the Latino community of Washington, D.C.
