Description:

Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets, Brookland, presents Kennedy Odede and Jessica Posner to discuss the new book Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss, and Hope in an African Slum.

Odede, a community organizer who grew up in Kibera, Kenya, and Posner, who met Odede as a Wesleyan undergraduate on a semester abroad, take turns narrating this story of one of Kenya’s worst slums and the hope they’ve inspired there. Odede founded the nonprofit SHOFCO—Shining Hope for Communities—when he was still a teenager, and Posner joined him in 2007—the first white person to live in Kibera. Later the two married, Odede completed his formal education in the U.S., and the couple founded a much-needed school for girls, which now has an enrollment of 140. SHOFCO has continued to grow, and includes a women’s health clinic, an AIDS information center, a library, and other services, with a similar project scheduled to open in Mathare.
