Plamen Press, named for the Slavic word for “flame,†is dedicated to making Eastern European literature available to readers of English. Join Feingold, Plamen’s editor-in-chief, and Kostovski, a translator who is also the press’s director, for a celebration of the first English-language edition of this novel by the late Czech writer, Hana Andronikova. Winner of the Magnesia Litera Award in 2002—her country’s highest literary honor—Andronikova’s novel unfolds over the course of a day and a night, yet spans twentieth-century events from a Czech village in the 1920s to Calcutta in the 1930s, from war-torn Europe to post-war Canada and on to contemporary Denver.
