Description:

Africa World Now Project and the Institute for Policy Studies present the film:

Cabralista, A Documentary Trilogy

Africa World Now Project teams up with Institute for Policy Studies for a film screening and discussion inspired by the opus of Amilcar Cabral, one of Africa’s foremost anti-colonial leaders and thinkers who led the movement of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde Islands to independence.

Cabralista, A Documentary Trilogy, directed and produced by Valerio Lopes, reveals Cabral’s fantastic theories and ideas in a spotlight. Following the screening will be an in depth discussion led by Mr. James Early, member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Policy Studies and former Director of Cultural Studies and Communication at the Center for Folklife Programs and Cultural Studies at the Smithsonian Institution.

The in depth discussion explores (but is not limited to) Amilcar Cabral’s theory by exploring such questions as:

  • Why is it important to have a theory in a movement?
  • What are some of the important lessons that we can learn and apply from Cabral today?
  • What was his influence on movements that might be seen today?
  • How can we reconcile the means and methods of movements during Cabral’s time with that of today’s Black Lives Matters?
  • Can Cabral’s understanding and explanation of colonialism be a relevant frame of reference to understanding the violence happening in Afro-descendant communities today, particularly given the empty rhetoric of post -colonial Africa/Latin America and post racial U.S.?
  • What is the state of the Black left and is it possible to say that there is a black left?

Join us for a rich film that is sure to be followed by a richer discussion.

Africa World Now Project (AWNP) is an educational program that seeks to merge theory with practice through an active agenda where we engage in various initiatives that map the continuities in history, culture and politics of the entire African World...Our mission is to (re)connect Africa with all of its known and unknown parts.
