Phil Portlock, a native Washingtonian, is a photographer, writer, producer of numerous video documentaries on African and African-American history and a social justice activist.
Through narration, music and vivid images, this 40-minute presentation captures the short but transformative life of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) from his early life in the midwest to his rise as national spokesman for the Nation of Islam, that rescued him from a life of crime. He became one of the main figures of the Black Nationalist Movement during the 1960s. His death on February 21, 1965, 50 years ago, robbed our nation, and African-Americans in particular, of one who symbolized the hope of an oppressed people.
