Busboys and Poets and Citizens' Climate Lobby Present: OVERHEATED! Hot Takes on Climate Change, a partnered series of discussions and exhibitions about climate change, climate activists, and climate voters.
Please join us Wednesday, January 29 at 6pm at Takoma for this month's event: "Read All About It - Climate Reporting and Sifting Through Bad Science."
With such an extraordinary amount of information bombarding us every day, it can be hard to choose reliable, evidence based news sources when it comes to climate change reporting. Similarly, mountains of data can be hard to distill down to a few key findings for the general public. Reporters can face harassment and intimidation for probing the most egregious climate offenders, and stories that take months of hard work to research and write can be trampled over in the blink of an eye by soundbites, scandals and clickbait. How do we, as readers, determine what constitutes good, honest climate journalism, and how do hard-working climate reporters combat the opaqueness of their subjects?
Moderated by Marianne Szegedy-Maszak. Marianne Szegedy-Maszak is the Washington editorial operations director in the Washington, DC, bureau of Mother Jones. She is the author of I Kiss Your Hands Many Times: Hearts, Souls, and Wars in Hungary.
Panelists include:
Rebecca Leber - Mother Jones Environment and Climate Reporter
Julian Brave Noisecast - VP of Policy and Strategy, Data for Progress
Justin Worland - TIME Magazine Environment and Climate Reporter
Dr. Jessica Moerman - AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow
After the panel discussion, stick around for Sunrise Movement's Green New Deal Announcement and a pair of short videos on the subject.
