ALL DAY SCREENING AT ALL LOCATIONS

Phil Portlock, a native Washingtonian, is a writer, social justice activist, photographer and producer of documentaries on African and African American History. In 2004, he and his wife, Pat Sloan, traveled throughout South Africa. This journey resulted in the creation of From Despair To Hope: A History Of South Africa.

This 70-minute documentary traces the country’s dramatic history from 1652 with the arrival of the Dutch East India Company through the 1994 historic election of Nelson Mandela as South Africa’s first democratically elected president.

With the skillful and creative blending of music, images and narration, Phil offers the viewer an opportunity to witness the struggle and victory of hope over despair.
