Please join Ujima, Inc. for coffee and conversation on the viability of online dating for black women.The conversation will focus on the roles that racism and misogyny play in black women's online dating experiences in their quest to find love. Coffee and light snacks will be provided.
Many dating apps have begun to implement anti-discrimination policies on their platforms yet the algorithms for most of these apps can still promote discrimination, intentionally or not. As Melanie Lefkowitz explains in her work, in 2016, a Buzzfeed writer reported that the dating app CoffeeMeetsBagel showed its users only potential matches of the same race, even when the users said that they had no preference. Every time someone swipes left, right, accepts a message, or clicks the ‘winky face’ emoji, these various algorithms update to screen out individuals as options.
So what do we do? Where do we go from here? How do we change the narrative about Black women online and in real life? What spaces are more inclusive and accepting of Black women? Which sites have the highest ratings and engagement for Black women?
