Description:

Join the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) and the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) for the live presentation of Niño de Noviembre: a concert dedicated to Marco Antonio Molina Thiessen and to the victims of enforced disappearances in Guatemala with Fernando López and special guest, dancer Gabriela Álvarez Castañeda.

The event will kick off with a discussion with Emma and María Eugenia Molina Thiessen, the family members of Marco Antonio who have stopped at nothing in the pursuit of truth, justice and reparation for his disappearance; Jo-Marie Burt, senior fellow at WOLA specializing on state violence, human rights and transitional justice in Peru and Guatemala; and Viviana Krsticevic, Executive Director of CEJIL, organization that represented the family before the Inter-American System on Human Rights.

About Fernando López: He began his musical career during the days of counterinsurgency in Guatemala. At twelve years of age he represented Guatemala at the 11th World Festival of Youth and Students in Cuba in 1978. Fernando is an actor, independent producer, guitarist, marimba player, composer and songwriter. His music has accompanied since its inception the counter-cultural, social, and aesthetic processes of his home country. Fernando is also an Anthropologist with postgraduate specializations as well as an Ethnomusicologist linked to processes of recovery of historical memory, the defense of Human Rights and Transitional Justice in Guatemala, an a National Researcher of the United Nations Commission for Historical Clarification (Guatemalan Truth Commission). He performs a musical ethnography that recreates social reality through the study and experimentation of the musical forms of Guatemala along with other universal genres, to achieve a universal Latin sound.

Fernando López has 13 recorded albums dedicated to the memory of poets and missing children in Guatemala, and the collective efforts to build a better country. The release of the album "Niño de Noviembre" in homage to Marco Antonio Molina Theissen, a 14-year-old boy who was kidnapped by the Guatemalan army in 1981, is a culmination of a project which seeks to permanently link Guatemala to the World Music circuit. The album title makes reference to Marco Antonio's birth date
