Join us live to celebrate the launch of The Blueprint. Co-sponsored by Jacobin Magazine
Join Mike Beggs, Ben Burgis, and Daniel Tutt for a conversation celebrating the release of The Blueprint: How Socialism Can Work in the Real World, the new book by Beggs, Burgis, and Bhaskar Sunkara. Moving beyond abstract calls for change, The Blueprint asks one of the most urgent and difficult questions facing the left: if capitalism is failing, what could a workable socialist alternative actually look like? Its answer is a democratic system in which workers control production while competitive markets and state planning coexist—neither capitalism nor the centralized planning models of the past.
Drawing on the history of socialist experiments and decades of debate about markets, planning, ownership, and democracy, the book confronts past failures without abandoning the possibility of a radically different future. This event will explore the authors’ practical vision for an economy that socializes capital, democratizes workplaces, restores the commons, and places markets in the service of human needs. Join us at Busboys and Poets, 450 K Street NW in Washington, DC, on October 3 from 6–8 PM for a timely discussion of what a socialism worthy of the twenty-first century could become.
