Federal Prosecutor and now author Jared Fishman tells the story behind one of the most infamous cases of police violence in the 21st Century, shedding light on the life and death of Henry Glover. In a New Orleans ravaged and destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, survivors were left to pick up the pieces on their own. Black New Orleans residents in particular were neglected, abused, and even faced police/state violence in the aftermath while trying to survive. Glover was found charred in a burned-out car two weeks after the storm, with an autopsy report that listed no cause of death. According to The Nation, a gravely wounded Glover had last been seen in a car driven by a New Orleans police officer. Fishman, a young prosecutor working on low-level civil rights cases in the Justice Department, found the case intriguing and decided to learn what happened to Glover. This led him out to New Orleans with a rookie FBI agent, and together they were determined to bright the truth to light.
FIRE ON THE LEVEE tells the behind-the-scenes story of the struggle to hold police accountable for one of the most egregious and shocking cases of abuse. Follow Fishman on his journey to figure out just what happened to Henry Glover and to bring his murders to justice. In that journey, Fishman exposes much of what is broken in our current criminal legal system and discusses how we can begin to address and fix it.
Jared Fishman is joining us on the Busboys stage to share his experiences investigating police violence and accountability in New Orleans. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event, and Fishman will be signing following the program.
This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:10 PM, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Please note that this event is IN PERSON and will NOT be livestreamed.
We ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books.
