Join us to learn about the life and legacy of Charles Barkley on and off the court.
Author Tim Bella has written a definitive biography of Charles Barkley. This new book explores his early childhood, NBA career, and legacy as a provocative voice in American pop culture and communities.Throughout his life he created a lasting impact led by his passionate, candid, and gifts he displayed. He is noted as one of the most interesting American athletes in the past fifty years. We have the opportunity to get to know the real Charles. He was raised by his mother and grandmother in Leeds, Alabama. In his adolescence he struggled to fit in until he found a sense of community and purpose in basketball. In the NBA he went toe-to-toe with the biggest legends in the game, from Magic to Michael to Hakeem to Shaq.

Timothy Bella is joining on the Busboys stage to discuss their new book. He will be joined in conversation by Sopan Deb. This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of BARKLEY will be available for purchase before and during the event. Timothy Bella is a staff writer and editor at the Washington Post. His work has been published in the New York Times, Esquire, The Atlantic, New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, CNN.com, VICE, ESPN’s Andscape (formerly The undefeated), and other outlets. Bella was also the lead researcher for the New York Times bestsellers Tiger Woods and The System, both by Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian. Bella has a master’s from Columbia Journalism School, where he was a Stabile fellow. He lives with his family in Northern Virginia.
Sopan Deb is a basketball writer and a contributor to the Culture section for The New York Times. Before joining The Times, he covered Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign for CBS News. He is the author of the memoir “Missed Translations: Meeting The Immigrant Parents Who Raised Me” and the novel “Keya Das's Second Act.”
