WASHINGTON, DC – The Anacostia Business Improvement District has partnered with the DC202Creates and DC JazzFest's Jazz in the 'Hoods, presented by Events DC, on Friday, September 2, 2022, for the ANACOSTIA JAZZ HOP from 12 pm to 8 pm at several locations in Historic Anacostia including Sandlot Anacostia. All events are free and open to the public.
In celebration of the 18th Annual DC JazzFest, this is the first time Jazz in the 'Hoods will be in the official Anacostia Arts and Culture District. Attendees to Historic Anacostia's flourishing arts district will be treated to the neighborhood's charm, music, and arts offerings at various creative hubs - from dynamic jazz performances at the Anacostia Arts Center to artistic expressions and exhibits at Busboys and Poets. In addition, everyone will delight in the PopUp outdoor jazz cafes with live jazz, visual artists, and the opportunity to have tasty bites from up-and-coming chefs and caterers.
The event kicks off at noon at the NSC Café Jazz for opening remarks and live performances. Concurrently, the jazz Hop, a variety of dynamic performances, will begin at six locations within the Anacostia BID: the NSC Café Jazz (2007 MLK, Ave SE), BIG Jazz Café (1234 Good Hope Rd SE), Busboys and Poets (2004 MLK, Ave SE), Check-It Enterprises (1920 MLK, Ave SE), Martha's Outfitters (2204 MLK, Ave SE) and the Anacostia Arts Center (1231 Good Hope Rd SE).
Jazz lovers can expect a unique cultural experience featuring local performers, visual artists, delicious cuisine, art, retail, and more! The organizers would like to thank National Service Contractors, and Martha's Outfitters for generously allowing the use of their lots for this special event.
"We are thrilled to partner with Mayor Bowser's administration to host the JazzHop as part of the DC JazzFest "Jazz in the 'Hoods" in the Anacostia Arts and Culture District," said Kristina Noell, Executive Director of the Anacostia BID. "It promises to be a rich, diverse cultural experience in the heart of the District, Anacostia. The Anacostia BID welcomes all across the District and the region to this day-long event in one of DC's most unique and diverse communities."
ABOUT THE JOGO PROJECT
The JoGo Project is a band from Washington, DC that fuses many styles of music, but with Jazz harmonies and a driving Go-Go beat at its core. JoGo was founded by DC Native and Jazz Saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed during a residency at Strathmore in 2014. Eight years later, The JoGo Project has become a mainstay in the DC music community and is dedicated as ever to keeping DC's Go-Go music alive while also exploring new sounds and repertoire. Over the years, the band has written several original songs and created original arrangements of songs less-commonly performed in the Go-Go idiom such as "Free" by Deniece Williams or "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina & The Waves, to name a few. In 2011 when Elijah was a Sophomore at Howard University, he received a life-changing call to perform with the Godfather of Go-Go - Chuck Brown. Elijah performed with Chuck from May of 2011 until the Godfather's death the following year - May 16th, 2012. That year Elijah spent with Chuck instilled a new-found love for Go-Go music, which would forever influence his sound and approach to music. When it was time for Elijah to start a band of his own - he knew it had to be something that brought his Jazz and Go-Go worlds together.
