Description:

There is a better way of living and leading that invites people to engage wholeheartedly in leading profound change that is deeply connected to people’s inner well-being and to their communities of accountability. These authors have seen it and experienced it. Together, they wrote a book to share what they have learned about living and leading change on purpose. “We are not the first to call into question dominant modes of thinking and talking about leadership and vocation in churches, seminaries, and non-profit organizations,” the authors write. “We are part of a great cloud of witnesses who believe there is another way."

What began on the back porch of Parker J. Palmer’s home 10 years ago, “as a lingering sacred conversation” is a new book centered on four practices known by the acronym C.A.R.E. Create hospitable space. Ask self-awakening questions. Reflect theologically together. Enact the next most faithful step. These C.A.R.E. practices are the building blocks for discerning, accompanying others, and living and leading change on purpose. They challenge systems in need of liberation and reject the “cult of individualism” that so often leaves people burned out, unwell, and unable to meaningfully lead.

Stephen Lewis is president of the Forum for Theological Exploration (FTE). Dori Grinenko Baker is a senior fellow at FTE and Matthew Wesley Williams is interim president of the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta.
The Another Way book tour will convene in churches, seminaries, and bookstores across the country, for lively, interactive conversations about the intersection of faith, leadership, vocational discernment, and social change.
