AT THE DC CONVENTION CENTER Join Busboys and Poets Friday at The CBCF Annual Legislative Conference for any of the following scheduled events. Located at the DC Convention Center Free and open to all!

The CBCF Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) is where thought leaders, legislators and concerned citizens engage on economic development, civil and social justice, public health and education issues. More than 10,000 people attend 100 public policy forums and much more.

12 PM Author Monique Morris Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues: Education for the Liberation of Black and Brown Girls

1 PM Art as Politics: Some thirty years ago, poet Sonia Sanchez observed, “The black artist is dangerous. Black art controls the “negro’s” reality, negates negative influences and creates positive images.” Local DC visual artists and curators will explore the relevance and impact of this statement in their work thru a lively discussion. Panelists include: Carol Rhodes Dyson, Curator in Residence, Busboys and Poets and Howard University’s Interdisciplinary Research Building Zoma Wallace, artist and independent curator (former curator for the District of Columbia - DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities) Mia DuVall, artist/muralist/public artist Jay Coleman, artist/muralist/public artist Keyonna Jones-Lindsay, Executive Director, Congress Heights Arts and Culture Center Rodney Buck Herring, artist, graphic designer Dee Dwyer, photographer Remi Aqui, printmaker In addition to the panel, ART LIVE at the Busboys and Poets booth at the CBC will feature local artists creating their work as if in their studio.

3 PM Author Derrick Musgrove to discuss Chocolate City: A History of Race & Democracy in the Nation’s Capital Monumental in scope and vividly detailed, Chocolate City tells the tumultuous, four-century story of race and democracy in our nation's capital. Emblematic of the ongoing tensions between America's expansive democratic promises and its enduring racial realities, Washington often has served as a national battleground for contentious issues, including slavery, segregation, civil rights, the drug war, and gentrification.

4 PM Jazz Talk & Performance: The Culture of Jazz in DC | Big Chair Discussions: The culture of Jazz music in DC from Jazz Musicians, enthusiasts and stakeholders perspective: Aron Myers of WPFW, Jazz Musicians and Jazz Festival leaders discuss Access, Compensation, Behavioral Health and Education in the jazz community.
