Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here DC. Street Starts Here: Commemorative Readings 2019 reflect upon the 12th anniversary of the bombing of al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad, Iraq.

On March 5, 2007, a car bomb exploded on Baghdad’s al-Mutanabbi Street, the legendary center of the city's literary and intellectual community, famous for its enormous selection of books in various languages and subjects. The blast killed thirty people and wounded more than one hundred. With respect to our fellow citizens in Iraq, the Middle East, and in many other societies where lives are stamped out, and freedom of expression is constantly endangered, we offer this reading.

Since 2007 the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here coalition, formed in support of freedom of expression, acknowledges that 1096 journalists and media assistants have been killed around the world. The violence against them is escalating shamelessly. Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here-DC dedicates the 2019 commemorative readings to stop the obstructions to press freedom and to guaranteeing the safety of Journalists.
