FEATURING: MUNAZZA SAALIM ABRAHAM

My name is Munazza Saalim Abraham, and I am a scientist and a poet, which means I am a creator and a healer. I was formally introduced to the arts when I wrote my first poem in 4th grade. As you may imagine, it was terrible. It was raw, ugly, and too real. As a writer, it took me 20 something years to be brave again; but I have finally made my way back to being raw, ugly, and too damn real. Writing has always been my outlet when my voice felt dismantled. Today, I use my writing and my voice as an author and spoken word poet. With pen, volume, and hunger for actual justice, I will continue utilizing the arts as an organizing tool that empowers and heals communities through my research at the University of Baltimore Maryland (UMBC). I am a 2nd year Clinical & Community Psychology PhD student. I will become a licensed clinical therapist with an emphasis on the healing arts. My UMBC research interests include developing and evaluating jail intervention/diversion programs, prison arts programs and community empowerment models. Additional long-term goals include using research to promote policy change and provide creative and evidence-based services to reform prisons and policing culture.
