Bread & Roses is a monthly labor series that features a variety of events focused on workers and organized labor. Each month brings a new topic through interactive discussions, film screenings, and performances.
Born out of the struggle of organizing African American workers in the “Black Belt” region of North Carolina and the South, more than twenty two workers, at various times, have participated in this dynamic cultural workers organization, based in North Carolina. Recruited from workplace and community struggles, they have captured in music oppressed peoples’ and the working class’ history of community and workplace struggles.
From anti-apartheid in South Africa and Azanian liberation to workers solidarity, women’s oppression and liberation, the anti-war movement, black- brown/African American-Latino unity, globalization, run away corporations, justice and jails, youth and hip-hop; the Fruit of Labor’s music and songs speak to the bitter and sweet struggles of the oppressed. Their music beautifully celebrates the fruitful victories of oppressed people and workers’ glorious history, sorrow and joy!

The hope for these events is that attendees walk away with a greater understanding of organized labor, its role in shaping history and current relevance. The name "Bread & Roses" was inspired by a poem/song written by James Oppenheim that appeals for both fair wages and dignified conditions.
