Join Busboys and Poets for a book talk and discussion with local author Ceil Lucas on her book How I got Here, which tells of her upbringing in Guatemala City and Italy from ages five through twenty-one.
"I wasn't raised here - I'm not from here", Ceil says of America. But the study of her family history reveals that her mother's ancestors came from Scotland to Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1654 and her father's came to Philadelphia from England in 1679. Ceil's ancestors' stories have become her own, and are central to her genealogical memoir. They help explain, in the broadest sense, how she got here. The memoir is a balance between "I'm not from here." and "I'm deeply American."Â
Ceil Lucas is Professor Emerita, retired from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, where she taught Linguistics from 1982 - 2013 through American Sign Language (ASL). She holds a BA in French and Art History from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and a PhD in sociolinguistics from Georgetown University. Co-author and editor of many articles and books on the structure and use of sign languages, she has also created materials for teaching language, including ESL. She started teaching Italian in 1973 and continues to do so. Lucas lives in Maryland.Â
