Please join Busboys and Poets books for a reading of Lysistrata in Jerusalem, a new play by Jean R. Freedman, written in cooperation with Abeer Shehadeh and Sivan Atzmon.
Lysistrata in Jerusalem is an updating of Aristophanes' classic comedy in which women from warring city-states band together and refuse to have sex with their men until a peace treaty is signed. Written by Jean R. Freedman, in cooperation with Sivan Atzmon and Abeer Shehadeh, Lysistrata in Jerusalem brings this strategy to the contemporary Middle East, creating a world in which Israeli and Palestinian women seek to end the conflict by taking matters into their own hands. This reading will be accompanied by a discussion with Palestinian and Israeli delegates from New Story Leadership, an organization that brings young leaders from the region to Washington for the summer.
Guillotine Theatre presents this reading of Lysistrata in Jerusalem with a cast of professional actors from DC's theatre community. Don't miss this comic brew of sex, politics, and uppity women!       Â
This event is co-sponsored by Guillotine Theatre (formerly known as The Georgetown Theatre Company), a a woman-run classical theatre that pulls no punches. Guillotine Theatre produces both classic theatre, and modern plays that are either adaptations of classic literature or deal with classic literature as subject matter. We believe that plays are written not just to be read, but also to be performed, and we have dedicated the past thirty years to keeping literary theatre in front of audiences. Guillotine Theatre has advocated for women playwrights since the inaugural year of SWAN (Support Women Artists Now) Day in 2008. We have worked to put the work of women playwrights and directors onstage in readings, workshops, and full productions in Washington, DC.
