In the book, sex workers are defined to include exotic dancers, porn
stars, peep-show workers, professional dominants, phone-sex
operators, strippers, webcam performers, prostitutes, and providers of a
vast array of niche adult services. ?It?s not a labor of
love to manufacture sexual pleasure,? Chateauvert writes, ?it?s
work.? The book likens the professional struggles of sex
workers to the difficulties faced by those in other
industries that draw from a similar labor pools?primarily
women and people of color with few other options due to
circumstances like lack of education and immigration status.
Melinda Chateauvert
is an activist who has been involved in many grassroots campaigns to
change policies and attitudes about sex and sexuality, gender and
antiviolence, and race and rights. As a professor she has
taught courses on social justice organizing, the civil
rights movement, and gender and sexuality. In fall 2013, she
will join the Center for Africana Studies at the University
of Pennsylvania.
