Come join Jason Hamacher and Jim Thomson as they
launch Hamcher?s Lost Origin Sound Series to raise awareness
for Syrian culture and honor Hamacher's time with the Syrian
people.

Hamacher spent years traveling to Syria documenting the
ancient prayers, hallowed rituals, and sacred spaces of Syria's
religious minorities. In 2005, Hamacher was granted permission by
the Syrian Orthodox Church, one of the earliest Christian
communities, to record their oldest chant traditions. Smithsonian
Folkways is scheduled to release an album of these invaluable
recordings later this year. Over the course of his journey,
Hamacher was fortunate to record several albums of sacred music
including the Sufi, Armenian, Syriac, and Assyrian traditions. He
created the Lost Origin Sound Series to introduce and share his
archive of cultural relics with the world.
On June 16, Hamacher will play NAWA: Ancient
Sufi Invocations & Forgotten Songs From Aleppo in it?s
entirety, discuss the importance of preserving cultural
music, tell stories from his adventures in Syria, and open
the floor for discussion.
