Africa World Now Project Presents: Hip Hop as Critical Consciousness with Dr. Jared Ball
“It’s Bigger than...Hip Hop”
Culture, in general, hip hop, specifically, has been established as a rich subject for studying the various dimensions of sociopolitical experiences of marginalized peoples, particularly people of African descent. However, hip hop as a cultural expression has far surpassed its localized roots to become a global platform for a vast array of communities. This fact is implicit in the line taken from the track above. With this, a number of questions arise: What is hip hop? What culture is hip hop reflecting? How can hip hop be used as a force for change? Can hip hop serve as a platform for developing a critical human rights consciousness? This interactive session is designed to provide a deeper understanding of the issues that marginalized communities face. Exploring the intersection of culture, movements, critical consciousness formation, and human rights, paying particular attention to how marginalized people find ways to resist the conditions that create and perpetuate oppressive experiences.
