Docs In Progress partners with the DC LaborFest and the Bread and Roses series to present a sneak peek at three documentary works-in-progress which touch on aspects of work and workers in the Metro DC area. The filmmakers will show clips from their works-in-progress and discuss what goes into making a film, how they've adopted organizing principles from the labor movement to build audience and support for their work, and what the next steps are for their films to be completed.

CREATIVE FEDS (with filmmakers Erica Ginsberg and Leon Gerskovic)
Far more than the “faceless bureaucrats†pilloried by anti-government ideologues, federal workers find outlets for their creativity both on and off the job. As this film shows, they may find their creative outlet through a paintbrush, a musical instrument, or on a stage. For some, their creative outlet helps them be more creative in their government work, while for others it may simply be a hobby which provides balance to their work lives. Or it may be a second career of someone equally dedicated to serving their country and their craft.

CITY OF TREES (with filmmakers Lance Kramer and Brandon Kramer)
This is the intimate story of one community's fight for equal access to good jobs and safe parks in our nation's capital and the life of a federal stimulus grant awarded to a DC-based nonprofit to launch an urban forestry program targeted at communities hardest hit by the recession. What sounds like a simple goal — putting people back to work by planting trees in a blighted neighborhood — opens up a complex web of personal and community challenges that mirrors the national political and economic climate.

Bread & Roses is a monthly labor series that features a variety of events focused on workers and organized labor. Each month brings a new topic through interactive discussions, film screenings, and performances. The hope for these events is that attendees walk away with a greater understanding of organized labor, its role in shaping history and current relevance. The name "Bread & Roses" was inspired by a poem/song written by James Oppenheim that appeals for both fair wages and dignified conditions.
Bread & Roses is held on the second Tuesday of every month at Busboys and Poets, Takoma
Free and open to all!
