Description:

Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets, Takoma, presents Hector Tobar as he discusses his new book Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free.

Tobar was granted exclusive access to the miners who survived sixty-nine days trapped in Chile’s San José Mine in 2010. An experienced journalist and novelist, Tobar has deftly interwoven stories of geology, unlooked-for adventure, and spiritual meaning. He follows the action both on the surface, at Camp Esperanza (Hope) with an international team of rescuers, including NASA advisors, and 2,000 feet below, where the men ration their dwindling supplies, pray, and try not to give up.
