Please join us for the DC Tutoring and Mentoring Initiative (DCTMI) Kickoff Event at Busboys and Poets 14th and V St., NW location on Monday, August 3rd from 6:30-8:30 PM.
The DCTMI Kickoff Event will include opportunities to network, learn about volunteer opportunities, hear stories from our partner organizations, and be entertained by DC-area artists. You can purchase tickets for the event here. We have also created a Facebook event which we hope you will join and share widely.
DCTMI is committed to working with our partner tutoring and mentoring organizations and schools to recruit all to provide a tutor or mentor to the 40,000 students reading below grade level in the District and others who have academic and non-academic needs.
Partnering with us for this event are Project Northstar and Youth in Mind, Inc.
Project Northstaris a one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program for children in grades K-12 who are homeless or living in foster care or in poor, underserved neighborhoods in the District of Columbia. The program was founded in 1989 by a multi-racial coalition of young community leaders from the Coalition of 100 Black Women, Concerned Black Men, and three law firms and has served more than 1500 children. Youth in Mind, Inc. (YIMI) is a minority women owned and operated organization located in Washington DC serving youth ages 7 to 17 in the metropolitan area. YIMI is a structured organization which empowers, supports and guides youth in all areas of their personal, academic, and professional development. Through emphasis on necessary principals like; values, discipline and respect, they work with the youth through adolescence, puberty and into adulthood. YIMI creates opportunities that will improve their lives and help strengthen their connection with their communities, families, higher learning institutions, and the business world that awaits them.
