When universities, communities and schools come together as public entities to leverage assets, knowledge and skills in an effort to bring about fundamental K12 change, using strategies beyond the obvious, they create efforts to develop unique initiative building on the capacities of the communities and local universities. This discussion of the successful strategies’ used by of national programs will highlight the strategies’ and possibilities that are available in the Washington metropolitan area. Focusing on issues of how local partners can create and hone programs improving the education of local students to shift local/national conversations and increase commitment to K12 equity; and to squeeze the resource sponge of the community and university to create K12 opportunities to learn. We will discuss questions about typical and transformational efforts to enhance the educational experience.
Dr. Kevin Michael Foster is an associate professor with tenure at The University of Texas at Austin. He has authored dozens of academic articles on minority student achievement and culture, and is an award winning collegiate level teacher. He founded ICUSP in 2006 to bridge teaching, research and service. Through ICUSP, Dr. Foster has been able to build partnerships and work with students at the middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to teaching undergraduate classes and guiding graduate students, he currently meets weekly with a group of 35 students at Chavez High School in Houston Independent School District. From 2009-2010, Dr. Foster took a leave of absence from UT Austin to serve in the Federal Government. There he worked as American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Policy Fellow assigned to the National Science Foundation.
