Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets 5th & K welcomes Jean Trounstine to present the new book "Boy With a Knife."
In Shakespeare Behind Bars, Trounstine, professor emerita of humanities at Middlesex Community College, told the compelling and thought-provoking story of her decade teaching and directing plays at
Framingham Women’s Prison, work for which she was named a “Woman who Dared” by the Jewish Women’s Archive in 2000. Her sixth book homes in on one particular young male prisoner, relating the story of Karter Kane Reed. Convicted of murder in 1993, Reed, though only sixteen, was sentenced to life in an adult prison—one of nearly a quarter of a million youths tried, sentenced, or imprisoned as adults annually. Reed, however, was exceptional in that he successfully sued the Massachusetts Parole Board twenty years later, and was freed.
Trounstine will be in conversation with Josh Rovner, juvenile justice expert at the Sentencing Project.
