Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets 14th & V welcomes Deb Heard and Dana Williams for a special Banned Books Week Panel.
Banned Books Week runs from September 25 to October 1, and focuses this year on diversity. The week is a celebration of reading as well as is an important reminder that we can’t take free and open access to ideas for granted. According to the American Library Association, more than 11,300 books have been challenged in this country since 1982, and the effort to restrict the written word continues. Among the top ten most contested titles last year were Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, Susan Kuklin’s Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out, and the Bible. Join Deb Heard, executive director of the Hurston/Wright Foundation and a former editor of the Washington Post Style page, and Dana Williams, professor of African American literature and chair of the English department at Howard University, for a discussion about diversity, censorship, and how to supports the authors who need it the most.
