Description:

Sunday Kind of Love Open Mic Poetry features emerging and established poets from the Washington, DC area and around the nation. Each program includes one to two featured poets and an open mic segment. Co-sponsored by Split This Rock, Sunday Kind of Love was notably featured in the Washington, DC episode of the Travel Channel original series, Samantha Brown’s Great Weekends.

Hosted by Sarah Browning and Katy Richey 

Sarah Browning is the author of Killing Summer (Sibling Rivalry, 2017) and Whiskey in the Garden of Eden (The Word Works, 2007). She is co-founder and Executive Director of Split This Rock: Poetry of Provocation & Witness and an Associate Fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies. Browning is the recipient of artist fellowships from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, a Creative Communities Initiative grant, and the People Before Profits Poetry Prize. She has been guest editor or co-edited special issues of Beltway Poetry Quarterly, The Delaware Poetry Review, and POETRY magazine. Since 2006, Browning has co-hosted the Sunday Kind of Love poetry series at Busboys and Poets in Washington, DC.

Katy Richey 

Katy Richey’s work has appeared in Rattle, Cincinnati Review, RHINO, The Offing, and other journals. She received an honorable mention for the Cave Canem Poetry Prize and was a finalist for Tupelo Press Snowbound Chapbook Poetry Award. She has received fellowships from Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Callaloo Creative Writing Workshops and The Cave Canem Foundation. She is also the recipient of a Fine Arts Work Center Walker Scholarship for Writers of Color and a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award. She is a member of the Black Ladies Brunch Collective.

FEATURING: Joseph Green and Poets of the Sunday Kind of Love Community: Mark Berman, Jim Hayes, and Nubia Kai

Joseph Green is a spoken word artist, educator, and motivational speaker with over 15 years’ experience in youth development. He co-founded poetryN.O.W., a nonprofit providing creative writing programming and curriculum for DC-area youth and schools. While serving as Split This Rock’s Director of Youth Programs for 3 years, he transferred poetryN.O.W’s work into Split This Rock’s care. 

Mark Berman is a produced playwright, a poet, and an activist grandparent. His published poems include "Charlottesville" which appears in DASH. He has been a playwright, actor, and member of the Guthrie Theatre acting company in Minneapolis, MN. He has served as Playwright-in-Residence at Penn State and Florida State University. He is the Founding Director of the Playwrights Theatre in Florida and the director of three national award-winning MacArthur Foundation plays. 

Jim Hayes is a retired engineer with a long history volunteering for Split This Rock. He graduated from Old Dominion University and George Mason University.

Nubia Kai received a Ph.D. in African historical literature and film from Howard University and was a former assistant professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at Howard University. She is a poet, novelist, and playwright who has received numerous awards, including two National Endowment for the Arts Awards and six DC Commission on the Arts Awards. She was selected as a finalist for the Larry Neal Writers Competition. She has a collection of poetry, Solos, and a historical novel I Spread My Wings And I Fly.

Sunday Kind of Love is held on the 3rd Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14th& V from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

$5 Cover. On the day of the event, tickets can be purchased online starting at midnight and in the restaurant starting at 10:00 AM in the bookstore. No refunds. Ticket purchase limit of 4 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door if available.  

Guests must have their wristbands (tickets) on upon entering the event.
