The DC Anti-Violence Project seeks to use spoken word, dance, poetry, visual art, and other forms of artistic expression to bring DC LGBT communities together for a night of healing and self-expression to prevent violence in and against our communities and to support the survivors that live in our midst.
After the violence against our diverse LGBT communities in Orlando, many in the DC area have responded with nationwide calls for healing, justice, and collective action. In light of the emotional, visceral reaction that has been felt through the country, we seek also to highlight the motivation that has been sparked around more local, community-oriented needs.
We hope to bring together LGBT artists, performers and community members to perform in a safe, LGBT-affirming space, and to share their art and talent as well as their connections to violence prevention and healing from violence. The event will also feature an art show composed of pieces made by those participating in art activities with healing aspects through The DC Center for the LGBT Community, as well as anti-violence resources and community tools for those seeking educational or support services.
The primary mission of the DC Anti-Violence Project is to work to reduce violence against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) individuals through community outreach, education,and monitoring cases to ensure that the rights and dignity of LGBT victims are respected and protected.
