Please join Busboys and Poets Books as we welcome author Ashish Kothari and Kalpavriksh to 5th and K to discuss a remarkable, first-ever collection of 35 essays on India’s future, by a diverse set of authors –activists, researchers, media practitioners.
Founder-member of Indian environmental group Kalpavriksh, Ashish has taught at the Indian Institute of Public Administration, coordinated India’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan process, served on Greenpeace International and India Boards, helped initiate the global ICCA Consortium, and chaired an IUCN network dealing with protected areas and communities. Ashish has (co)authored or (co)edited over 30 books, and helps coordinate the Vikalp Sangam and Radical Ecological Democracy processes in search of alternative well-being pathways to globalized development. His latest books are Churning the Earth: Making of Global India (with Aseem Shrivastava) and Alternative Futures: India Unshackled (ed., with KJ Joy).
This event is co-sponsored by 'Kalpavriksh (KV), a voluntary group based in India, working on environmental education, research, campaigns, networking and direct action. It began in 1979, with a students' campaign to save Delhi's Ridge Forest area from destruction. Starting with these roots in local action, KV has moved on to work on a number of local, national, and global issues. Its activities are directed to ensuring conservation of biological diversity, challenging the current destructive path of 'development', helping in the search for alternative forms of livelihoods and well-being, assisting local communities in empowering themselves to manage their natural resources, and reviving a sense of oneness with nature. It has helped initiate several national and global processes, including Vikalp Sangam (Alternative Confluences), the ICCA Consortium, and the Radical Ecological Democracy network.'
Books will be available before and after the event. Please email books@busboysandpoets.com with questions.Â
